Leamington’s Hidden Gems: Exploring Our Smaller Parks (Part 2)
Following the wonderful response to our first exploration of Leamington’s lesser-known green spaces, we’re back to share more hidden gems that make our town special. While Jephson Gardens and Victoria Park might steal the spotlight, these smaller parks offer peaceful retreats and unique characteristics that deserve recognition.
Eagle Recreation Ground
While technically a sports ground, this versatile space off Mason Avenue has evolved into much more than that. Beyond the football pitches, you’ll find a hidden nature trail along its edges, offering surprise glimpses of local wildlife. The morning dew on the grass creates a magical atmosphere for early walkers, and the recently installed outdoor gym equipment makes it a popular spot for fitness enthusiasts. Midland Oak Park
The original Midland Oak was thought to have been part of the old Bins Wood, which was part of the forest of Arden. It was believed to mark the centre point of England. It was known as the “round tree” and was featured in prints during the civil war. When the original oak died in 1967, it was felled to straighten Lillington Road. Today, the park features interpretive panels telling the story of the original oak, while new saplings planted in recent years ensure its legacy continues. It’s a perfect spot for a history-inspired picnic or quiet contemplation.
Crabtree Meadow
This hidden riverside meadow, nestled between the railway line and the River Leam, offers a wilder, more natural experience than many of Leamington’s manicured spaces. The meadow’s seasonal flooding creates unique wetland habitats, making it a hotspot for birdwatchers and nature photographers. In summer, the tall grasses and wildflowers provide a haven for butterflies and bees, while the riverside path offers peaceful walks away from the town’s hustle.
Welches Meadow
This charming pocket park tucked away behind Leam Terrace is a true community success story. Once neglected, local volunteers have transformed it into a thriving natural space with native wildflower patches and fruit trees. The meadow’s south-facing slope makes it a perfect sun trap, and the newly installed interpretation boards help visitors identify local flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for the resident hedgehogs that have made this space their home!
Looking After Our Hidden Gems
These smaller parks play a vital role in our community, providing green spaces within walking distance of many homes. Local volunteer groups help maintain several of these areas, and new members are always welcome. Contact the Friends of Leamington Parks for information about getting involved. Otherwise, see you on Thursday @ 8 am for our What's On list!
